Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

It is a race against time when a baby elephant loses its mother. Sadly, in Africa, this is not uncommon – drought, poaching, and conflict with humans threaten the survival of many young animals.

Since 1977, the Kenya-based wildlife conservation organization Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) has been dedicated to exactly this cause: rescuing orphaned elephants and rhinos. They are raised with care to one day be reintegrated back into the wild. Over 320 elephants and 19 rhinos have already been successfully reintroduced in this way. SWT’s internationally recognized Orphans’ Project is considered one of the first and most successful rescue and rehabilitation programs of its kind worldwide.

Dame Daphne Sheldrick, founder of SWT, pursued a clear mission: not just to save individual animals, but to build sustainable structures for species conservation. Out of this conviction, SWT created a network of interlinked projects that operate across Kenya, which today includes, among others:

• anti-poaching teams that protect wildlife in in national parks and protected areas from poaching and other illegal activities
• an aerial surveillance unit that monitors vast areas and supports field operations,
• mobile veterinary teams that provide medical care for injured or ill animals directly in the field,
• initiatives and measures for reforestation and habitat protection,
• as well as the Water for Wildlife program, which provides sustainable water sources for wild animals in arid and drought-prone regions through boreholes and mobile supplies to waterholes.
